NEC, answered
The questions teams and parents ask most — about teams, divisions, eligibility, preparation and what NEC tests. Still unsure? Reach us on WeChat.

The essentials, in plain language
Most teams have the same handful of questions before they enter: who can compete, how teams work, which division to pick, and what NEC actually tests. The answers below cover all of them — and our test center is happy to help with anything specific to your school.
Can I take part as an individual?
No — NEC is a team competition. The PRE division has 2–4 students per team; the David Ricardo and Adam Smith divisions have 4 students per team.
Can I change teammates after forming a team?
Team members can be changed only before the registration deadline. After the deadline, the team on record is final and no further changes are allowed.
Can teams be formed across different schools?
Yes. Cross-school teams are allowed, but all members must register in the same division, and the team designates one home school for official records and honours.
Can I change my division after registering?
Each student has one opportunity to change divisions before the registration deadline, provided they meet the eligibility criteria for the new division.
Can students at overseas schools register for the China NEC?
Yes. Students studying abroad can take part in the regional and China rounds. Advancement to the global rounds follows the official rules.
How should I choose the right division?
Students new to economics (or with only IGCSE introductory economics) can join the entry-level PRE division. The Adam Smith division suits students who have completed AP Micro and Macro and can confidently score top marks; the David Ricardo division suits students who have studied one economics course (and offers a higher chance of advancing). Placement is by experience, not age.
What subjects does NEC test?
Three areas: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and International Economics & Current Events. The balance is roughly 40% theory and 60% applied analysis, so NEC rewards integrating theory with real-world application.
What does a competition round involve?
Four components: an Economics Assessment (multiple-choice), a Case Study Analysis with an oral defence, a timed Economic Innovation Challenge answered as a team, and a live Econ Quiz Bowl.
How should we prepare?
When does registration open, and what are the dates?
Dates for the upcoming season are confirmed by the CNEC Organizing Committee. See the schedule for the season structure, or message our CNEC-authorized test center for the confirmed deadlines.
